Hi everyone! I have a flaky rash on my back, arms and legs, which my GP thinks is candida, but is also wondering about psoriasis. I've had lots of different creams and four different courses of antibiotics since July, and it is improving now. I had just begun on Enbrel in July, managed two injections, but then the candida arrived, and I'm unable to restart the Enbrel until everything's sorted. I have an appointment to see a dermatologist tomorrow so hopefully all will be sorted then. My main question is about the antibiotics. I'm puzzled because my joints aren't as swollen and stiff as I expected them to be, and I'm feeling really well, despite having had no proper treatment for two months - I'd previously been on Leflunomide but my white cell count was too low. The same happened with Methotrexate and sulphasalazine. I'm wondering if antibiotics help to suppress the arthritis? Any thoughts please. Mylo x

Hi Mylo

I have never heard of antibiotics suppressing arthritis symptoms. You may just have come through a flare and are having a quite time at the moment. There is psoriasis induced arthritis which is different to RA. The Dermatologist will no doubt help you on this one but you need to discuss your meds with Rheummy Nurse. Good luck

Hi Mylo

You have jogged my memory, when I first started getting severe symptoms of RA my " then " consultant thought I had Reactive Arthrits, which is not normally a long term condition, and I was dosed up really heavily with antibiotics which basically achieved nothing in my case as I in fact had RA which at that time was not diagnosed. So there is obviously is a connection, no doubt others will enlighten you further on the subject.

Good to hear all is going well for you, long may it continue ThumpUp

Hi Mylo,

I have read before about antibiotic trials for RA and I found this link

http://arthritis.about.c...c/a/antibiotictreat.htm

Interesting.

I do wonder though why you have been given antibiotics for candida, which is a fungal infection and normally treated with anti-fungal drugs?

Hi, thanks for all the replies.

Doreen, I'll look up the link you've given me. I was told I had both a bacterial and a fungal infection, so was given oral antibiotics and antifungals - Metronidazole, Fluconazole, Flucloxacillin and Itraconazole, and various creams. Apologies, I think I misled you by saying four courses of antibiotics!

Since writing the post, I've remembered I had a course of penicillin for a dental abscess six months before my first symptoms started, and also a mosquito bite on my eyelid which got quite nasty, just a few months before things started to go downhill.

I just wonder whether any of this links into the RA .....

Hi Mylo

You were well covered then with anti-fungals and antibiotics!
If you click on the link I gave it will take you straight to it.
It is interesting, trials were done some years ago and seemed to be getting somewhere but I think interest was lost in the antibiotic theory when all the new drugs for RA were produced, so they didn't get funding for the trials.
Others on here have said their RA improved while on antibiotics and I have had this too. Don't know if it's the antibiotics acting on the RA or whether the immune system is busy elsewhere!
Let us know how your dermatology appointment goes tomorrow.

Hi

I ALWAYS get thrush when on antibiotics. Best stuff is that greek bio yoghurt apparently.

Penniciliamine used to be used a lot in RA patients- not so much now as the risks outweighed the benefits and the newer drugs were deemed as better.

Hi everyone

Thanks for all your comments.

The dermatologist doesn't think I have thrush or any infection after all! She wouldn't commit herself to a diagnosis though, and is arranging a biopsy. She asked me not to restart the Enbrel until after the biopsy. In the meantime, the rash is continuing to clear, so hopefully it's sorting itself out anyway. All a bit of a puzzle, really.

Has anyone else had a rash when on Enbrel or Leflunomide?
